During the 2012 Sitka Health Summit, held in October, residents of Sitka, Alaska, chose improving and promoting healthy and safe walkability in Sitka as one of its three community wellness projects for the year.
As part of this effort, the group Walk Sitka was created. Walk Sitka plans to file an application for a Walk Friendly Community award this spring. The Walk Friendly Communities program is a national awards program that helps communities improve their walkability. The application process looks at a variety of factors, including planning, education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement and evaluation. This site is under construction, so keep watching as we expand the site to highlight various walking infrastructure and opportunities in Sitka. We also will advertise upcoming meetings in the newspaper and on local radio stations. To learn more about the project, contact Charles Bingham at firstname.lastname@example.org.
