SAIL Senior Hiking Club sets next hike for the morning of Thursday, Nov. 4

The Sitka office of Southeast Alaska Independent Living Inc. (SAIL) has announced its next Senior Hiking Club hike event.

The hike will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 4. Seniors should meet at the Herring Cove trailhead, and rides are available for those who need them. Participants should be prepared to wear masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and practice distancing while on the hike.

Normally, the group picks the trail on the day of the hike, but occasionally a trail is picked before the event. SAIL makes trekking poles available for hikers to use (trekking poles are great on ice or uneven terrain, and they help seniors keep their balance), and hikers are encouraged to bring ice cleats such as YakTrax during the icy months of winter.

SAIL offers Senior Hiking Club events for those age 60 or older once or twice a month, and now plans to alternate them on Mondays with Adventure Club events. There is a $5 fee, but nobody will be turned away because of finances. The hikes are open to people of all abilities and fitness levels. To learn more about the Senior Hiking Club, check out our January 2013 post introducing the club.

To learn more about the Senior Hiking Club, senior and adaptive kayaking trips, senior cycling events, and and a variety of other outdoors skills and survival classes, contact SAIL ORCA (Outdoor Recreation and Community Access) program coordinator Matt Millado at 1-888-487-1029 or email him at mmillado@sailinc.org.

SEARHC hosts Stay Active, Stay Bright fall fitness challenge

Stay Active and Stay Bright this fall with SEARHC’s 2021 fall fitness challenge. You are invited to participate in a free outdoor fitness challenge for all residents of Southeast Alaska. We invite you to keep track of your active minutes spent outside from Monday, Oct. 18, to Monday, Nov. 15.

Every Monday throughout the challenge you will receive an email to log your minutes. Every time you log, you are entered into a prize drawing for a high visibility coat and other prizes. Register before Oct. 11 and you are entered into our Early Bird special with increased chances of winning prizes.

How to Enter

Step 1: REGISTER HERE

You will be asked about which size jacket you would like if you win. The Grundens Jacket size guide is here. The Ogio Endurance Jacket size guide is here. We are curious about ways to improve the man-made environment in your community, so there is a question asking about solutions to problem areas in your town.

Step 2: DOWNLOAD THE TRACKER – This is only for your personal use to help you keep on track.

Step 3: SUBMISSIONS – Every Monday morning you will receive an email on how to submit your active minutes outside. Check to make sure this email is not in your junk box.

Step 4: QUESTIONS? Please send them to Doug at douglaso@searhc.org.

What counts as active minutes outdoors? Anything that gets you physically active and out in the fresh air counts.

  • Walking a dog
  • Doing a walk and talk meeting at work
  • Raking leaves
  • Cycling
  • Playing tag with your kids or grandkids
  • Hunting
  • Hiking

Win Prizes

Participants will track active minutes outdoors to be eligible for some very bright weekly prizes, including high visibility jackets from Grunden’s. Everyone who replies by midnight on Monday each week will be eligible for prizes.

Get Social

Staying physically active and getting fresh air are important things to do throughout the year. Challenge your friends, family, walking buddy, and coworkers to participate. Get outside, de-stress, and maybe win a prize while you’re at it. We hope you can join us.

We would love to see photos of your progress, please post on social media and use the hashtag #SEARHCstayactivestaybright.
