SEARHC, Stride 365 co-host Run for Breast Cancer Awareness on Saturday, Oct. 5

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) and Run Sitka’s Stride 365 program will co-host the Run for Breast Cancer Awareness on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Runners should meet at 9 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. race start at the O’Connell Bridge Lightering Facility. The cost of the five-kilometer race and two-mile walk is a donation of $10. Proceeds this month benefit the Sitka Cancer Survivors’ Society.

Each month SEARHC and Run Sitka (#runsitka) host a Stride 365 event on the first Saturday of every month, with proceeds going to a different charity in Sitka.

The Sitka Cancer Survivors Society is planning a celebration event from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, in honor of cancer survivors and their families.

The society invites all those interested in joining them in walking through the “Path of Hope” park, celebrating with cancer survivors, their families and friends.

Come meet the board members to find out what we are all about, how we got started, and what we do to help support all those dealing with cancer. Refreshments will be served by the Sitka Emblem Club  No. 142. Come and enjoy the beautiful park, and celebrate with fellow cancer survivors and their families.

The Path of Hope Inspirational Park is located on Moller Drive, behind Sitka Community Hospital and behind the running track at Moller Field.

The society invites all those interested in joining them in walking through the “Path of Hope” park, celebrating with cancer survivors, their families and friends.

Come meet the board members to find out what we are all about, how we got started, and what we do to help support all those dealing with cancer. Refreshments will be served by the Sitka Emblem Club  No. 142. Come and enjoy the beautiful park, and celebrate with fellow cancer survivors and their families.

SEARHC, Run Sitka host run/walk for Sitka Cancer Survivors Society on Oct. 14

Please join SEARHC-Mount Edgecumbe Hospital and Run Sitka (#runsitka) at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, for a five-kilometer run or a two-mile walk to support the Sitka Cancer Survivors Society.

There is a $10 suggested donation for registration. All donations will go to the Sitka Cancer Survivors Society.  The first 50 participants will get a free t-shirt.

Registration is at 9 a.m. at the O’Connell Bridge Lightering Facility, and the run race starts at 9:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:45 a.m.

Julie Hughes Triathlon celebrates its 33rd year on Saturday, May 20

The 33rd running, biking and swimming of the Julie Hughes Triathlon starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Blatchley Middle School.

The event is a fundraiser for the Sitka Cancer Survivors Society and honors the memory of a young Sitka woman who passed away from leukemia at the age of 15. (Click here for an April 2013 Capital City Weekly article about Julie Hughes.) Day-of-race registration ends at 8 a.m., a pre-race briefing takes place at 8:45 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m. (NOTE, the website says the race starts at 9 a.m., but the flier says 8:30 a.m. for the race start, so be early.) The bike staging area opens at 7 a.m.

JulieHughesTriathlonFor the sixth straight year, the Baranof Barracudas Swim Club is organizing the race, having taken over event hosting duties from the Hughes family. Registration takes place online at http://juliehughestri.com/. The entry fee is $35 per person ($15 per child age 17 or younger), and people can enter as individuals or teams. Day-of-race registrations are $40 for adults and $20 for children. Participants are encouraged to have bike safety checks done at Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop before the race.

The course is a five-mile run from Blatchley Middle School to the U.S. Coast Guard-Air Station Sitka gate and back, a 14-mile bike ride from Blatchley to the Starrigavan Recreation Area at the end of Halibut Point Road and back, and a 1,000-yard swim at the Blatchley Middle School swimming pool. There is a shorter course available for participants who are age 12 or younger (1.5-mile run, six-mile bike, 500-yard swim).

SEARHC to host breast cancer awareness month fundraiser walk for Sitka Cancer Survivors Society

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) will host a breast cancer awareness month fundraiser walk this weekend for the Sitka Cancer Survivors Society.

Walkers should meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the O’Connell Bridge lightering dock, and the walk will start at 9:30 a.m. Walkers will follow Harbor Drive and the Sitka Sea Walk to the tennis courts and back to the lightering dock, a distance of about one mile.

The walk costs $10 per person, and t-shirts are available for the first 60 people to register. All proceeds benefit the Sitka Cancer Survivors Society, which will use funds to help local cancer survivors deal with expenses..
